It’s 1972! Bell bottoms rule, everybody’s doing the Philly Dog, and Soul Train comes on every Saturday morning. But instead of enjoying life, Desiree is in crisis mode. The drummer in her high school band has committed suicide and no one seems to be the least bit concerned. Not Mr. Blackburn, the band instructor, who only cares about his upcoming Greatest Marches of All Time concert. Not her cheerleader sister, Shauna, who is busy plotting how to become the first pom-pom wielding Blaxploitation star. And certainly not the student body, that are consumed with learning the Boogaloo in time for the Winter Ball. Desiree, disgusted with the level of apathy around her, tries to wake people up, and in the process, comes to her own startling realizations.
I hope you all will come out to see my latest one-woman show, Free Desiree, which plays March 9, 10, 16 and 17 at Velocity Dance Center on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. I’m thrilled to be finally doing the full length version of this show that has had excerpts workshopped over the last few years. It is directed by the awesome Tikka Sears. If you haven’t been to Velocity’s new space and the Founders Theater yet, here’s your chance. It is beautiful, intimate and inviting. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $12 for students and seniors, and are available at the door, or visit:www.brownpapertickets.com/event/226589 . Hope you get your amazing self there!
